report 1/2: Sake Award @Hyper Japan Spring 2012

It was a bit while a go, there was the UK's biggest J-pop event called
"Hyper Japan", held three days at Earl's Court in London.
From this year, "Sake Award" had started within this event,
inviting 1,000 public participants to taste Sake from enrolled breweries,
and vote for their favorite one.
I was honored to supervise the whole event from the planning as an executive sommelier.
Even Sake, which rather is more masculine and serious, looks so Kawaii (pretty in Japanese)
with the help of Lolitas!

Even it it "J"-pop event,
It is a part of culture I had not been close to.
The event hall is full of people like this and like that who I never seen before.

J-pop

? Last folks are a bit different...lol

There was seven breweries entered for Sake Award:

"MUKANTEI GINJO" of Kikusui Sake, from Niigata prefecture
Mr. Kikuchi san and Mr. Richard san of Kikusui came from Japan.

"DASSAI 23" of Asahi Shuzo, from Yamaguchi prefecture
Ms. Iida san is here from Paris!

of Kawatsuru Sake Brewing, Kagawa Prefecture
President Kawahito san had visited UK again between the busiest sake making season!

"HAKKAISAN JUNMAI GINJO" of Hakkaisan Brewery, Niigata Prefecture
Ms. Kurosawa san from Los Angeles branch came to UK this time.

Takara Shuzo, Hyogo Prefecture
Mr. Akutsu san of Paris branch joined this time.

"OTOKOYAMA JUNMAI" of Otokoyama, from Hokkaido
Mr. Takatsu of Japan Prestige Sake Association participated instead of the brewery.

of Choryo Shuzo, Nara Prefecture
President Iida san and Mr. Hayashi san came from Nara!

All Participants were evaluating the sake from 7 different breweries
based on general categories such as aroma, palate and food pairing,
and on more unusual ones: label & bottle design, naming sense,
background story of the brewery, and so on.

Sake Award booth was full of people!
Though I was a bit worried if participants could handle the evaluation of 7 different sake in detail,
everyone was so into being a "judge" for this sake tasting.

For three times a day for three days,
I had lead basic & advanced Sake and Umeshu seminar at
Taste Discovery Zone across from the Sake Award.
In each seminar, we focused on 3 selections of one brewery's sake/umeshu.
Participants seemed to be amazed to taste the variations of flavors
coming from different drinking temperatures, different rice, yeast or polishing ratios
as well as the distinctive characteristics of each brewers.

Thank you very much for this post. I participated in your tasting class and in the sake tasting. Choosing one winner was tough : they all had interesting qualities and every brewer was so enthusiastic about their sake ! The food pairing was interesting : I would never have paired sake with wasabi crusted peanuts :) by myself. See you at the next HJ.
