"Let Us Walk Together" the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake Memorial Service / 東日本大震災追悼礼拝式

On 10th March, the day before the 2nd year anniversary of the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake, 

There was a Memorial Service organised by the St John the Evangelist Church 

in Blackheath, London yesterday.

東日本大震災の二周年記念の前日、昨日３月１０日に

ロンドンのSt John the Evangelist教会にて追悼礼拝式が行われました。

Rt Revd Dr Michael Ipgrave, the Bishop of Woolwich gave us the address

including personal reflections of his visit to the area affected by earthquake and tsunami last summer.

He was a fluent Japanese speaker and shared us his experience 

in the devastated Jōdogahama of Miyako, Iwate prefecture;

The beach once likened as "Gokuraku Jōdo", the Pure Land Paradise by a by the buddhist priest.

and Kenji Miyazawa, the famous Japanese poet who was born and raised in Iwate prefecture

wrote a poem from his impression of Jōdogahama breach;

"Beauty of the velvety sea kelp laid and shined in the feather light on the seashore"

the Bishop had contrasted these beautiful sceneries of the shore in the writings and

the scenery he faced after the earthquake and tsunami.

and the end, introduced us a quote from the bible;

"There is a time for everything,

and a season for every activity under the heavens;

a time to be born, and a time to die, a time to tear down and a time to build,

a time to weep and time to laugh, and a time to be silent, and time to speak"

日本語が驚く程ほど堪能な、親日家のウーリッジ地区の司教である

マイケル氏が、昨年の七月に被災地をいくつか訪ねられた時の話をしてくださいました。

特に、彼が岩手県宮古市の浄土ヶ浜に行った際の話が印象深く残っています。

江戸時代仏教徒によって「さながら極楽浄土のごとし」と名付けられ、

岩手出身の宮沢賢治によって

「うるはしの海のビロード昆布らは 寂光のはまに敷かれひかりぬ」

と表現された浄土ヶ浜。

その美しい表現から想像する景色と、震災後の破壊された景色とを比べられながら、

「何事にも時がある。

生まれるとき、死ぬとき、破壊するとき、たてるとき

泣くとき、笑うとき、黙するとき、語るとき」

という聖書の言葉を紹介頂きました。

London based Japanese female chorus group "The Green Chorus" had sang

"Hana wa Saku" and "Home Sweet Home" and "Amazing Grace"

in both Japanese and English. 

Listening beautiful and touching songs far away from home,

 I was thinking of the people in Japan.

ロンドンで活動される日本人の女性コーラスグループ

「グリーンコーラス」の皆さんが日本語と英語で

「花は咲く」「埴生の宿（はにゅうのやど）」そして賛美歌の

「アメージング・グレース」を歌ってくださりました。

異国の地で聞く美しい日本語の歌を聞きながら、

日本の皆さんのことをずっと想っていました。

15,881 people had passed away because of the earthquake and tsunami

and Miyagi prefecture lost the most; 9,535, then Iwate 4,673, and Fukushima 1,606 people. 

There is still 2,668 missing and 315,196 people 

are still living under the evacuated shelters and residences.

Two year feel like a forever, yet feel like yesterday at the same time.

Thanking for the enormous support and love received from all around the world,

and being a part of continuous support in my possible way for the area's restoration.

I had promised myself again at this ceremony .

８日現在、震災で死亡した人の数は１万５８８１人。

最も多い宮城県は９５３５人、次いで岩手県で４６７３人、福島県では１６０６人。

行方がわからない人は全国で２６６８人となっており、

　先月７日現在で未だ３１万５１９６人の方が全国に避難しているそうです。

二年という時間は永遠のようでもあり、たった昨日のようでもあります。

世界中の皆様より頂いた多大な支援と愛に感謝をしながら、

今日も続く被災地の復興をできる形で応援していこう。

そう再認識した追悼式でした。

I had introduced the messages from President Saura of Urakasumi Sake Brewery,

and President Ken Uchigasaki of Uchigasaki Brewing Co. the brewery of Hoyo,

sent for today's ceremony.

私からも、宮城県塩竈の浦霞醸造元の佐浦社長と富谷町の鳳陽醸造元内ヶ崎社長より

今回の式に向けて頂いたメッセージを紹介させていただきました。

After the service we have served two sake to the more than hundred audiences;

Urakasumi "Zen" Junmai Ginjo and Hoyo "Genji" Tokubetsu Junmai.

Because of the area some people there had never tied sake before.

Many of them had amazed how wealth and delicate the flavours of sake were.

式の後、浦霞 禅 純米吟醸と、鳳陽 源氏 特別純米の二種を

振る舞い酒として１００名以上の参加者の方々に試飲していただきました。

地元の方が多く、初めて日本酒を飲んだという方も何人もいらっしゃり、

皆さん味わいの豊かさと繊細さに感激されていました。

This is my big Sake sister Rie Yoshitake, who supported me so much for this event.

今回、お酒の提供や多大なサポートをしてくださった理恵さん。

ロンドンでの私の日本酒ファミリーのお姉さんです。

Also, let me express biggest 'thank you's to the Bishop for making this happening

Reception at Emperor's Birthday / 天皇誕生日レセプション

On 8th of December, last month, I was honored to be a one-day resident Sake sommelier 

at "the Emperor's Birthday Reception",

the biggest party held at Japanese Embassy every year.

The room was filled with over 500 guests!

昨年の１２月８日、英国ロンドンの日本大使館で毎年行う

最大のパーティ「天皇誕生日レセプション」にて、

一日専属日本酒ソムリエとして出張営業してきました。

今回のパーティは毎年行われる大使館最大規模のもの。

会場は５００人以上ものお客様でいっぱいです。

End of last year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs released the great news that

all the diplomatic establishments abroad such as an embassy

will serve Sake as a "national alcohol" to toast at the Emperor's Birthday celebration.

Coping with this news, I got offer to "spice up the Sake booth" on this day.

How can I not get excited?

昨年末に外務省より、世界中の日本大使館など在外公館の

天皇誕生日の祝賀会の際、乾杯を基本「日本の国酒」である

日本酒で行うという方針が発表されたばかり。

そんな嬉しいニュースも相まって、大使館の山崎さんより

「日本酒ブースを盛り上げて欲しい」という素晴らしいミッションを引き受けました。

これはもう頑張らない訳ありません。

This time we served 5 Sake from Tohoku region.

I prepared the Sake information sheet as above to give out.

My goal was that everyone who tried Sake for the first time or who is a regular Sake drinker

would taste the Sake from #1 to #5, and find their favorite one out of 5.

今回お客様に提供するお酒も東北の酒５種。

当日は上の各お酒の情報とティスティングノートの載った用紙を

準備して参戦しました。日本酒を初めて味わう人からマニアの人まで、

①〜⑤まで全て試してもらい、自分のお気に入りを見つけてもらうのが目標です。

I started to offer glasses of "LaChamte", sparkling Sake by Hideyoshi from Akita

to the guests who came in the entrance.

Because of its only 8% alcohol content, much lower than the average,

its fruity and sweet flavors and fine and long-lasting bubbles,

Anyone who tried loved the Sake by saying "I can't believe it's made by rice!"

I am so sorry to tell you this, but I got so competitive to the staff

who was offering champagne at the entrance.

会場の入り口で、秋田の秀吉さんの発泡日本酒「ラシャンテ」を

来館されたお客様に配る所からスタート。

アルコールたったの８％で甘口フルーティ、細かで持続性のある気泡に

「これ本当にお米から出来ているの？」と飛ぶ様な売れ行き。

シャンパンを配るタキシード姿のスタッフの方に

勝手に闘争心を燃やしてしまって、ごめんなさい。

She never left Sake booth; she brought so many friends of her to the booth and

introduced Sake for so long. impressive!

日本酒ブースから離れずに、ご友人を代わる代わる連れていらして、

ずっと日本酒を紹介して下さいました。流石！

I was extremely happy to see many guests enjoying the

different characteristics and potentials of Sake this night.

夫々のお酒の持つ個性や味わいの特徴、

その幅の広さを皆様楽しんでもらえたようで、

日本酒も私も幸せです。

i love u: moon / お月様

Since my name "Natsuki" did not have Kanji (Chinese characters),

At elementary school I decided to spell it as "菜(na) = rape blossoms" and "月(tsuki) = moon"

simply because I loved the rape blossoms (as food, best boiled) and the moon.

Even though I love the sun which shines on us,

the moon to me has been on my side without any words like an old-time friend 

who I can talk about anything.

Japanese old calender was based on lunar cycles

and you could tell the dates by watching the shapes of moon.

For Japanese people, who has been remembering our ancestors,

learning the rise and fall of the tides, and transitions of seasons by watching the changing moon,

the act of watching the moon is such a special habit.

On 10th December last week, you could observe total eclipse of the moon

all over in Japan and I assume everyone was looking up the sky then.

Though I couldn't see them in the UK, I also enjoyed it through live video footage online

and shared the precious moment with the people in Japan.

This season in my country is called "Toshi Wasure", means "forgetting the year's bad behaviors",

but the year 2011 exceptionally became "unforgettable" after the terrible earthquake.
Yet I was so glad that at the end of year like this,

we could all watch the same moon together to "remember" and to face the same direction.

How far the times goes by, let's look up the same moon together.

平仮名だけの「なつき」という名前に漢字をつけるとしたら、

断然「菜月」にしようと決めたのは小学生のとき。

その頃から、菜の花のお浸しとお月様が大好きだったから。

じりじりと私たちを照らしてくれる眩しい太陽も好きだけど、

静かにそこにあって、飽きる事なく眺めていられるお月様は

安心して何でも相談できる、古い友人のような存在。

旧暦の時代は、三日月なら毎月３日、上限の月(満月前の半月)なら７日、

満月なら１５日というように、月の形を見ればだいたいの日付がわかりました。

月の満ち欠けと共に自身の先祖を偲び、潮の満ち引きや

四季の移り変わりを肌で感じてきた日本人にとって、

お月様を眺めるという習慣はとても特別な意味のあることと学びました。

先日の１２月１０日夜、日本全国で太陽と地球、月が一直線に並んで起きる

皆既月食が観測され、各地で皆さんお月様を眺めていたことと思います。

英国では残念ながら観測できませんでしたが、

ネット配信画像を通して、私も月食の一部始終を見ることができました。

この時期、普段なら「年わすれ」「忘年会」といって過す時期ですが、

今年は私たちにとって「忘れられない」「忘れてはいけない」年となりました。

そんな年の暮れに、こうやってみんなで同じ月、
同じ方向を共に眺めることができてとても嬉しかった。

どれだけ時が流れても、同じ月を一緒に見ていよう。

Sake evening @Japanese Consulate General in Shanghai / 日本酒の夕べ＠在上海日本国領事館公邸

It's almost a month ago, but I had been to "Sake Evening"event
held at the residence of Japanese Consulate General in Shanghai.
I was invited by Masuda san of JALUX Shanghai, who used to be in London branch.
I was happy to see him again!

もう一ヶ月も前のことになりますが、

在上海日本国総領事公邸にて行われた「日本酒の夕べ」に参加してきました。

元ロンドンでお世話になり、現在JALUXの上海支部に赴任中の
増田さんにお声がけいただき初訪中。久々の再会に感激！

Shanghai has many houses from old British and French settlements.
The residence of consulate general is also an over 100 year-old building
with beautiful Rococo style ceilings and stained glasses.

上海は旧イギリス租界、フランス租界の外国人によって建てられた
いくつも洋館の残っている街。
総領事公邸も、ロココ調の天井飾りやステンドグラスが素敵な
築１００年以上の歴史ある建物。

China has been banned to import any food and Sake made in Japanese
after the Japanese earthquake, and still gate closed in mid-November when event was held.
Responding to these situations, the Japanese consul general and JALUX Shanghai
organized this event in order to keep the spirit of Sake burning
with 5 Sake breweries. From north:

Akita Shurui Seizo of "Takashimizu" (Akira),

Kato Kichibee Shoten of "Born" (Fukui),

Yucho Shuzo of "Kaze no mori" and "Takacho" (Nara),

Nishiyama Shuzojo of "Kotsuzumi" (Hyogo),

Asahi Shuzo of "Dassai" (Yamaguchi).

中国は震災後、日本酒を含む日本産食品・農産物の輸入を全面規制していて、

イベントの行われた１１月半ばもストップ状態でした。

そんな中、日本酒文化を絶やさないため何かできないかという

総領事とJALUXさんの願いからこの会が企画され、
全国から５蔵が参加しました：北から「高清水」の秋田酒類製造（秋田）、

「梵」の加藤吉平商店（福井）、「風の森」「鷹長」の油長酒造（奈良）、

「小鼓」の西山酒造場（兵庫）、「獺祭」の旭酒造（山口）。

The invited guests of this event was wealthy class in China.
Most of the Sake presented was Daiginjo class.

From my favorite "Kaze no mori", Mr. Naoki Itatoko participated to present.

He came to Shanghai for half day just for this event.

このイベントの為に日帰りで駆けつけてくださいました。

The room was filled with around 40 guests

会場は４０名程のお客様でいっぱいに。

After Izumi Consul-General's speech, I gave an introduction on Sake

and stories on each breweries with Mr. Taka Yamamoto of Wajo,

Sake supplier and bar owner from Beijing.

泉総領事のご挨拶の後、北京で日本酒の販売とバーの経営をされている

和醸の山本敬さんと一緒に、日本酒について、そして各蔵の特徴について

紹介させていただきました。

止まらない、「乾杯（カンベイ）！」の音頭。

The person on the left is famous Chinese actor Yu Ze, he told me he loves Sake.

左の方は、中国でも有名な雨泽（Yu Ze）さんという俳優さんだそうです。

日本酒大好きなんですって。

Two hour had passed so fast.

Izumi Consul-General told us at the end:

"For Japanese folks, now you know today,

Chinese folks LOVE Sake!"
In China, Baiju and Shaoxing wine had been the most traditional and popular drink
for a long time, yet someone told me that young generation has been not liking
drinks high in alcohol or with strong flavors.
Instead, more delicate and lower alcohol contained Sake is becoming
more and more in trend amongst Chinese young people.

二時間の会はあっという間に終了。

日本酒の大好きな泉総領事が最後に。

「日本の皆さん、今日わかったでしょう？

中国の人は日本酒、大好きなんです！」
これまで中国の方々は白酒（パイチュウ）や紹興酒に代表される
アルコール度数や味わいの強い飲み物が一般的でしたが、
若い世代がお酒に弱くなってきているそうで、
繊細な味わいで低アルコールの日本酒は
非常に人気が高いと伺いました。

Mr. Yamamoto of Wajo is very quiet person,

yet I felt his big passion for Sake by just standing next to him.

So much to learn from you as a person who introduce Sake overseas for a long time!

和醸の山本さんは、とっても真面目で静かな方ですが、

側にいるだけで日本酒への愛情をひしひしと感じる情熱的な方でした。

海外で日本酒啓蒙を推進する大先輩、これからも色々教えて下さい！

Thank you Mr. Izumi Consul-General, Ms. Arima Vice-Consul,

Mr. Noguchi and Masuda of JALUX, everyone from JAL,

all participant brewers and staffs who helped the event...!

It was such a successful event that eveyone talked about next event,

and I felt so much energy towards Sake by having conversations with people in Shanghai.

Fortunately on 24th Nov, one week after the event,

Chinese government released great news that they had re-opened the gate to Japan for

Japan-made food and Sake after 8 months of blank time.

It would not be too easy still, yet we cannot miss out the trend of Sake in China.

I surely will come back there again.

嬉しいことにこのイベントの翌週の１１月２４日、日本産食品及び日本酒の

輸入再開の朗報が発表されました。

風評被害や輸入規制でまだまだ簡単にはいかないでしょうが、

これからの中国での日本酒の動きを応援していてください。

必ず、また上海に戻ってきたいと強く思っています。
